Introduction
Microneedles offer advantages over classical neeldes like syringes or lancets. Also, the potential for integration with analysis or smart delivery systems allows for faster and more accurate medical care that is more friendly to the patient.
For patients propably the most notable advantage is the pain free application of the microneedle array. Due to the length of the needles, the nerves are not reached and thus no pain sensation is registered. Making the microneedles sharp and strong enough to pierce the tough outer layer of the skin is one of the challenges when making microneedles.
Intelligent skin patches with microneedles could be used by the patient at home to check their status and supply the correct dose of medication. Checkups at the hospital can be reduced or checked remotely by the physician thus saving the patient trips to the hospital and reducing costs.
